A 3 square mile Lake Michigan Beach Town that sits at the mouth of the Galien River just north of the Indiana border. New Buffalo is one of the seven Harbor Country communities within Berrien County, Michigan in Southwest Michigan known as the “Southwest Gateway to Michigan”. New Buffalo is both a city and township about 90 minutes outside of Chicago by land, around 40 nautical miles by boat and just a short Amtrak ride away. There are a lot of vacation condos in the harbor area that sell very quickly. Both residents of Chicago and South Bend like this area for vacation homes and weekend getaways. South Bend is only an hour drive away.
New Buffalo Township is made up of several beach communities; Forest Beach, Grand Beach, Michiana, Riviera Beach, Sturgeon Beach, Timberlane Estates and Wolverine Beach. Many of the communities have associations with amenities ranging from beach access, swimming pools and golf courses. The homes vary in pricing from moderately priced to homes valued in the millions and consist of beachfront condos, vacation and permanent homes. The area is covered by New Buffalo Area Schools.
New Buffalo has stores, museums, galleries and restaurants. One of the unique restaurants and a favorite with locals is The Stray Dog Bar & Grill with its rooftop bar and live music. There is a wide range of places to eat or snack that have been around for a long time. Oink’s Ice Cream Shop has been around for more than 25 years and is a pig themed shop and serves local ice cream produced in South Haven, Michigan. Redamak’s Burgers has been around for over 40 years and is open for 9 months out of the year and always packed when you go by.
New Buffalo is dog and kids friendly. New Buffalo’s Sari Asher Memorial Dog Park is a great area to enjoy time with your dog. They have built a skate park for the kids and the city beach has a great place for them to enjoy. There is also the New Buffalo Railroad Museum for everyone to enjoy.
New Buffalo has great water activities from riverside parks, fishing boat charters and wonderful marinas. Their City Beach has swimming, sunbathing, a picnic area with a playground, boardwalk through the sands and access to boating on Lake Michigan and the Galien River. The city beach has its own non traditional lighthouse. The lifeguard station has been painted and built to look like a lighthouse. The New Buffalo Harbor has over 950 private and public boat slips. Several of the high end condo associations have their own slips. Condos are popping up all over the area and selling fast. New Buffalo’s close proximity to both Chicago and Indiana make this area very desirable. The breeze from Lake Michigan helps with the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter.
The annual New Buffalo Ship & Shore Festival has been held in New Buffalo, Michigan every August for over 30 years. The downtown area comes alive with music, games for the kids, arts and crafts. The evening brings a lighted boat parade and fireworks.
